This test will identify if a person is a possible match for a patient who is waiting for this life saving donation. A bone marrow transplant delivers healthy bone marrow stem cells into the patient. It replaces bone marrow that is either not working properly or has been destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation. Bone marrow transplants are used for certain leukemia’s and cancers as well as to replace bone marrow when treatment for cancer has destroyed the individuals own bone marrow. Anyone 18 or older can be pre-screened. The screening takes approximately 10 minutes and only requires an oral swab of the cheek. No pre-registration is required. MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital won the Emergency Services Award for their partnership with the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies that serve East Pierce County. As a county EMS base station, Good Samaritan Hospital’s physicians and nurses provide guidance to EMS providers in the field when necessary. Local EMS agencies and Good Samaritan Hospital devised a new way to communicate about incoming heart attack patients. EMS agencies are able to request activation of the cardiac catheterization lab for patients suffering a heart attack in the field. Through a combination of the paramedic’s clinical judgment and the use of bluetooth and cellular technologies, the decision can be made to alert the cardiologist and cath lab team while the patient is still being transported to the emergency department, allowing for quicker transition to the cardiac cath lab where life saving procedures can be performed. The Military Award was given to the MultiCare Neuroscience Rehabilitation Vestibular and Balance Program for an informal partnership with Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC). This partnership provides evaluation and treatment of soldiers and their families with balance injuries from trauma or disease. Many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who have been injured or exposed to high intensity explosions can suffer from Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, or MTBI. No similar service is available at MAMC or other military bases, so these patients have been cared for by civilian providers at MultiCare.
