Course Description:
Through discussion and an extensive slide presentation, the participant will gain many new and practical ideas for modifying or custom-fabricating a variety of equipment including seating and positioning devices, cycles, powered mobility equipment, computers, sports and recreation equipment, toys, ADL equipment, swings and adaptive switches.
The participant will also gain ideas for equipment options when commercial products are not available, too expensive or inadequately funded.
In addition to the slide presentation, discussion will include:
· Examples of and sources for special plastics, foams, fabrics and woods that make adaptations more functional, durable, aesthetic and simple
· Modification and fabrication terminology, principles, techniques and tools
Objectives:
· View variety of custom equipment adaptations which have been performed for specific client needs
· Develop increased awareness and creativity regarding the conceptualization, design and fabrication/ adaptation of adaptive equipment to meet specific client needs.
· Become familiar with the various materials, components, tools and techniques which are readily available and can be used to modify a variety of adaptive equipment.
· Understand the basic mechanical terminology and principles associated with fabrication and adaptation of equipment
· Develop strategies for effective problem solving during adaptive equipment assessment and evaluation
Intended Audience:
All therapists, teachers, aides, parents and volunteers working with children or adults with adaptive equipment needs.

Presenter
Steven Shores, MOT, OTR/L, is an Assistive Technology Specialist at the Children’s Therapy Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington. He functions exclusively as a consultant and resource to other therapists at the Children’s Therapy Unit as well as Mary Bridge Children’s Health Center. His job responsibilities involve evaluation, consultation and equipment design/adaptation/fabrication relating to adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
In addition to the numerous workshops Steve provides locally each year, he has presented at many workshops throughout the United States including the International Seating Symposium, Closing the Gap, the Pacific Northwest Technology Conference, the International Seating Symposium and regional conferences in Alaska, Arizona, California, Mississippi, Washington, Wisconsin, and even China.
