Post-mastectomy bra fitters provide comfort, support
by Amanda Suazo
Women may not know where to turn after a mastectomy, breast reconstruction or custom prosthesis, especially when it comes to finding clothes that will make them feel good. The Healthy Reflections Boutique is one great resource for women seeking a little style after a less-than-glamorous procedure.
Just ask Vicki Sabin, who had a bilateral mastectomy and now works at the boutique as a bra fitter. “Sometimes ‘wrapping the package’ can be most difficult,” she says.
Healthy Reflections offers chic wigs, camisoles and scarves, but they also have items suited for any woman. Clients will find a variety of clothing, jewelry, skincare products, and gifts.
Sabin isn’t your average bra fitter. Post-mastectomy fittings involve fitting prosthesis into special pockets in the bra to match as close to the remaining breast as possible; if a patient has had both breasts removed, they can choose different sizes.
As the number of breast cancer survivors increases and more insurance companies support the procedures, therapeutic apparel keeps improving. Products are not just limited to bras, and the market has expanded into pajamas, active wear and swimsuits.
“It is our desire to find good, comfortable products for our clients,” says Patrice Holland, who also works at Healthy Reflections Boutique. Women who haven’t even had a procedure buy bras there simply because they feel more comfortable.
Recovering patients also leave the boutique with a renewed sense of normalcy.
“Clients have made many comments about the warmth and encouragement they feel here,” Holland says. “The compliments are always rolling in.”
Staff members are always ready to offer encouragement and resources for recovery, such as classes, support groups and breast cancer walks. But if you talk to Sabin, she’ll say that attitude means something too.
“I remember waking up from surgery and feeling the same inside,” she says. “My daughter reminded me that who I am on the inside is what really counts. Having a positive attitude and the support of family and friends is huge.”
Healthy Reflections Boutique has locations in Covington and Gig Harbor, with post-mastectomy services in Gig Harbor exclusively. For more information, visit multicaremedspa.org/boutique.
