Six tips for a happy, healthy Thanksgiving
The holidays are a time to celebrate — with food, among other things. And even if you’re trying to take good care of yourself, you can still enjoy your favorite fixings and traditions. MultiCare dietitians have assembled these tips to help you make it through Thursday's meal in good conscience.

- If you’re preparing a meal look for low-fat and low-sodium options; these make a big impact on the amount of calories, fat and sodium consumed in a Thanksgiving meal.
- Make it a goal to get 30 minutes of daily activity (all at once or in 10-minute increments); this helps your body burn those extra calories you’ll be consuming.
- Keep your distance – floating around the food table can trigger mindless eating. Instead of grazing, serve yourself a small plate. You’ll feel more satisfied and consumer fewer calories.
- Be mindful as you eat and savor your favorite foods. If you have a craving, indulge but do so in moderation. This will help to prevent a holiday bender.
- Listen to your body; it is very effective at self regulating hunger/fullness. Remember it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to signal to your brain that it’s full. To avoid extra calories and low energy, don’t ignore internal cues telling you it’s time to stop. Plus, everyone loves leftovers.
- Look out for calorie and sugar dense liquid calories like holiday punch and eggnog. Choose water whenever possible.
