Building Facilities

The care we provide to our patients and their families requires more than just dedicated, passionate, expert health care professionals. Having up-to-date, welcoming, and family-friendly facilities, and amenities also makes it possible for Tacoma General and Allenmore Hospitals to provide the advanced, compassionate care that is at the core of all that we do.

Tree House LogoTree House: A Place for Families – named to commemorate the important role Festival of Trees plays in making this project a reality—is MultiCare’s new family housing complex located in the historic Frances Apartments at the corner of 4th and I Streets. Parents of children in Tacoma General’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Mary Bridge’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) can stay near their hospitalized children when they are needed the most. Milgard Pavilion - MultiCare Health System opened the Milgard Pavilion to its first emergency patients at ED Expansion7am on April 15, 2010 at MultiCare’s main campus in Tacoma.

The opening marked completion of the first phase of the MultiCare Health System main campus renewal plan, which included expanding the Emergency Departments at Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals and a new home for the MultiCare Regional Cancer Center.

Supporting this expansion was The Emergency Services Campaign—a joint fundraising project for Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation and MultiCare Health Foundation. The Emergency Services Campaign began in 2006 with an ambitious goal: to raise $25 million for the much-needed Emergency Departments. Ever step of the way, the generosity and compassion of the community has far exceeded our hopes—taking us to over $29 million in donations.

With 77 patient exam and treatment rooms on two floors, the Emergency Department expansion is designed to maximize staffing and census flexibility while addressing the unique needs of adult and pediatric patients.

The main Emergency Departments are located on the second floor, and have expanded from their previous combined 13,000 square feet to 73,500 square feet. This is more than five times the size of our previous Emergency Departments.

“We already are taking excellent care of patients, and we have the best technology and equipment,” says Jaime Delcampo, MD, MS, FACEP, Medical Director of Tacoma General’s ED. “But this new space gives us a chance to improve care even more, and that’s our goal.”

In addition to more than doubling the number of rooms available in the department, the new Tacoma General Emergency Department offers:

  • Open architecture and centralized nursing stations
  • A separate treatment area for patients not requiring emergency care
  • Private rooms, each equipped with computerized workstations
  • A soothing environment in waiting areas

“Our new Emergency Department provides a healthy, healing environment that will allow our staff to provide high-quality care to our community,” said Crystal Billings, nurse manager of the Tacoma General Emergency Department.

Crystal continues, “The calming, spacious, private rooms and high-tech equipment will allow us to meet the needs of our customers in a way that we have previously been unable to. Our staff will be able to apply their skill and training in a whole new way to really create a world-class experience for our patients and their families.”

The MultiCare Regional Cancer Center, located on the first and fourth floors of the Milgard Pavilion, expands the existing cancer center bringing all aspects of cancer care into a comprehensive facility. The design includes 27 oncology exam rooms, counseling and resource rooms, dedicated spaces for complementary therapies such as massage and yoga, and 40 semiprivate and private infusion chairs clustered in spaces with ample daylight and expansive views.

With the Milgard Pavilion up and running, construction is now under way to remodel 22,700 square feet in the adjacent Olympics and Philip pavilions. The remodeled projects are expected to reopen in winter of 2011.
