THIS CLASS IS CANCELLED AND MAY BE RESCHEDULED IN 2010

 2-Day Seminar, August 21 & 22, 2009, 8am to 5pm Daily, Nicky Schmidt instructor

This two (2) day course will focus on the basic principles of the Bobath NDTA, Inc. approach and present specific handling strategies that can assist in treatment of adult neurological patients in acute and rehabilitation care settings.

Participants will assess basic components of movement on each other, and learn to facilitate functional movement for goal oriented tasks scooting to the edge of the bed or wheelchair, transitioning to standing transfers, and using the UE actively for support and stability. The course format will involve lecture, laboratory time to practice skills on each other, and a patient demonstration performed by the instructor.

Upon completion of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the assessment principles used in NDT to evaluate biomechanical and neuromotor impairments and their impact on function in individuals with hemiparesis.
  • Describe the various possibilities that exist in early intervention for facilitating more normal movement in basic functional activities and for preventing secondary impairments.
  • Learn NDT handling strategies to facilitate more typical movement components and increase postural control when assisting patients in early sitting and standing activities.
  • Relate specific impairments and atypical motor behaviors to the patients’ functional limitations and establish appropriate treatment goals to address the impairments.
