Enhancing Functional Gait in Children
12/3/2009 8:00am - 12/5/2009 5:00pm
Enhancing Functional Gait in Children through Clinical Analysis and Neuro- Developmental Treatment.
December 3 - 5, 2009, Kathleen Ganley instructor
This course provides the participant with an understanding of the clinical significance of critical events during the gait cycle as well as the problem solving skills necessary to perform gait-related physical therapy evaluations and treatment planning in children with neuromuscular pathologies. Practical and clinically oriented assessment and treatment strategies, which can lead to substantial change in functional gait outcomes, are emphasized throughout the course.
A strength of this course lies in the direct application of course material through hands-on labs directed by NDT-trained clinicians. This course is ideal for experienced clinicians who want to improve their familiarity with the kinematics and kinetics of normal gait, expand their analytical and problem solving skills, and immediately practice intervention strategies in a laboratory setting.
Learning opportunities occur through lectures, group problem solving sessions, video applications, and handling labs.
Upon completion of the course the participants will be able to:
- Discuss the biomechanics associated with each phase of the gait cycle and the functional significance of specific events within each phase.
- Identify deviations from typical gait observed in children with neuromuscular impairments and develop hypotheses.
- Apply clinical reasoning skills for the identification of treatment priorities and the development and testing of hypotheses.
- Apply Neuro-Developmental Treatment strategies to assist pediatric clients in achieving more effective and efficient functional gait and locomotor skills.
Target audience:
This three-day workshop is designed for Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists working with treatment planning In children with neuromuscular pathologies.
