  At Good Samaritan, artist installs garden's 1-ton centerpiece

  Artist Ulrich Pakker was on site Thursday as his 1-ton steel-and-bronze sculpture was installed outside MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.
  

  Titled "Ringer, Interconnected," the sculpture is the centerpiece of the hospital's Community Garden, which will open in early September. The robustness of Pakker's work anchors the space between the 9-story Dally Tower, which opened in February, and the Good Samaritan medical office building under construction nearby.

  "The concept is that there's a strong connection between the hospital and the community, and the ring shows that interconnectedness," Pakker, whose studio is in Seattle, said Thursday while taking a break from the installation. "The stainless steel and the bronze will mature together. I hope it becomes a centerpiece and an attraction."

  The artwork was funded by community donations through the Campaign for Good Samaritan Hospital and selected by an art committee. The mission statement was "The Vision, Mission and Philosophy of Care at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital, 'to enhance the health and well being of every life we touch' will be reflected in the visual art selected.The selections will include pieces by Northwest artists and make the project sing."

  Art Committee members were Amanda Tucci, JoAnn Overfield, Judy Root, Rosemary Eckerson, Beth Herner, Cyndi Anderson, Ernest Rhoades, Inga Holmquist, Allison Garr, Naomi Coplin and consultant Ginny Scalzo of Arterra.
  

  "Thanks to the generous donations of the community through the capital campaign, we were thrilled to be able to install a sculpture of this size and beauty by a Northwest artist," said Allison Garr, Good Samaritan's Administrator for Campus Development.
