Playing and Engaging With Others - Introduction to Floor Time and /goodsam/event/1189 Playing and Engaging With Others - Introduction to Floor Time and The DIR Model November 14 & 15, 2008 (Friday Evening and Saturday), Fri 4:30PM - 9:00PM - Sat 8:00AM - 5:00PM COURSE DESCRIPTION: Floor Time is an intervention technique used to treat children with developmental disabilities and encourage intellectual growth. It is used within the framework of the DIR model. The DIR model is used to develop programs for children with special needs based on the developmental level, individual differences, and the relationships of the child to care providers. The purpose of Floor Time is to help the child master the six emotional milestones, one by one, in sequential order. This presentation outlines Stanley Greenspan\'s, MD, and Serena Weider\'s, PhD, definitive guide to raising a child with special needs, The Child with Special Needs: Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth. It covers disabilities including autism, PDD, language and speech deficits, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and DD, and offers a new understanding of the nature of these challenges. The program describes specific ways of helping children extend their intellectual and emotional potential, displaying the unique profile of the individual child. Day 1 - The class will begin with an explanation of the DIR model. It will also demonstrate Floor Time techniques necessary for the child to reach key milestones and to develop new emotional and intellectual capacities. This approach enables parents, as well as clinicians, to use seemingly playful interactions to assist children to move up the developmental ladder and often to master creative and abstract thinking. Day 2 - This class will demonstrate the use of sensory processing techniques within the Floor Time approach when providing intervention with children who have disorders of relating and communicating. We will discuss the use of these techniques by both parents and professionals within a variety of settings. Recently, ten new emotional development levels were identified and will be discussed from Greenspan\'s newest book, \"The First Idea\".
