BRIDGES Volunteer Information
Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities at BRIDGES: A Center for Grieving Children. The information below will give you a better understanding of how we select volunteers, the training process, time expectations, and the volunteer positions we have here at BRIDGES.
Volunteer applications and selection
If you are applying online, please complete both:
Volunteer Services will notify us of your application, but you may also want to email us to let us know that you sent it in. You can email Lisa.Duke@multicare.org.
Once we receive your application, we will call you for a brief phone interview, giving you a chance to ask any questions you might have about BRIDGES. We will schedule another interview after you have completed training. It’s important for us to make sure volunteers are appropriate for this type of work, and it’s also important that you feel ready and confident about volunteering. We will work together to find the best fit.
If you would like to receive a paper application, please call the volunteer office at 253-403-1005 and leave your name and address and one will arrive to you via mail.
Important training dates
We offer training sessions twice a year:
- On weekends at the end of January and early February.
- On weekends in the summer usually in late July or early August
Group Facilitator – Co-facilitates 1.5 hour grief support twice each month from September through May. The total time commitment for group facilitators is about 3.5hours each group night. Parent Loss and Sibling Loss Group nights are held on Mondays. Each age group has at least two facilitators and sometimes up to four.
Gym Facilitator- Plans and facilitates structured gym activities with all ages of kids, twice a month, on Monday or Wednesday nights.
Houseparent- Greets families on group nights, helps with the potluck dinner and cleaning up for closing circle.
Crafters- Engages in various sewing projects (Feelie Hearts, fleece blankets)
Camp Erin – A 3-day grief camp for children ages 6-17 years. Camp Erin is held each June at YMCA Camp Seymour, located 22 miles west of Tacoma. Approximately 40 volunteers are needed each year for this weekend camp. Applications are accepted January-March each year. Volunteers must be available for two Saturday training sessions in April, an evening in late May to meet the campers and parents, and the weekend camp.
Our needs and expectations
It’s best for children and adults to consistently form a team atmosphere while they are here at BRIDGES. When we place people into groups at the beginning of the school year, we ask the following from our volunteers:
- A time commitment from beginning of school year - May
- Two nights a month from 5:30-9:00 p.m.
- Attend BRIDGING - Quarterly facilitator meetings (scheduled on Monday nights)
Most of our group facilitators are needed on Monday nights, but we also have a Wednesday night group option. When you are placed as a group facilitator, you will be placed in the same group for the entire year. For example, if you are placed in the Crossings/Sibling Loss Teen group, your group nights will be the 1st and 3rd Mondays, and you will be with the same group of teens all year.
If you are a Parent Loss facilitator, you will facilitate on the 2nd and 4th Mondays all year long. Our Parent Loss group night is for parent death due to illness, accident, or something sudden(i.e. heart attack). Again, we will work closely with you to find the best placement. Points of considerations include past loss history and your current comfort with various age ranges.
Thanks again for your interest in BRIDGES: A Center for Grieving Children. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
