Understanding Sensory Processing/Integration

Understanding Sensory Processing/Integration with Remediation Strategies for Home/School/Clinical

This class runs Saturday and Sunday, May 2 & 3, 2009; from 8:00 - 4:30 PM each day

COURSE DESCRIPTION: To learn new skills, we must be able to maintain an optimal level of arousal so we can attend to our environment. When a child's sensory systems aren’t processing or integrating information appropriately, the world can be unorganized, leading to confusion, frustration and the inability to attend and learn from the environment. Good Samaritan's Children's Therapy Unit presents a two day course for teachers, parents and clinicians on the basic theory of Sensory Integration/Processing Disorders and remediation strategies for the home, school and clinical environments.

This course also provides intervention strategies for children with sensory integration/processing problems that might be associated with sensory defensiveness, attention deficit, learning disabilities, delayed motor coordination or pervasive developmental disorders.

Day One: Will include a general overview of sensory integration/processing. Important foundation knowledge of the nervous system and its interplay with sensory and motor systems will be introduced, including the characteristics of children with varying Sensory integration/processing disorders. Possible causes and the prevalence of sensory integration/processing disorder will also be discussed. A comparison and contrast of children with ADHD verses attention deficits resulting from Sensory integration/processing disorder will also be presented.

Day Two: Utilizes the foundation information provided in day one, participants will learn to problem solve and discuss a wide variety of treatment interventions (Sensory Diets ideas) for various sensory deficits.
