CANCELLED: Introduction to NDT in Pediatrics

This is an introductory course for health care and education providers. The course will introduce attendees to the principles of Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) as it relates to the treatment of the trunk, lower extremity and upper extremity in children with neuromuscular impairments. The course will include both lecture and hands on experience. Please dress comfortably as a large portion of this course will be devoted to hands on treatment labs. Previous courses in NDT are not required.

Course Objectives:

Emphasis on the trunk –

Participants will gain an understanding of the trunk, as it relates to normal movement, and gain skills in facilitating movement through the trunk.

Emphasis on the lower extremity –

Participants will learn the preparatory components of lower extremity movement, related to the acquisition of standing and ambulating, and obtain ideas forfacilitating more effcient and higher quality ambulation.

Emphasis on the upper extremity –

Participants will gain an understanding of the components of normal development, related to skilled movement of the upper extremities, and have an opportunity to practice facilitating movement leading to increased function.

Presenter(s):

Brett Nirider, PT, is a physical therapist at Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy Unit with more than 29 years of pediatric experience. He has had training and experience in both NDT and sensory integration, and has taught an eight-week pediatric NDT course, as well as assisted with the NDT baby treatment course. He is a coordinator-instructor of the pediatric NDT course and particularly enjoys instructing therapists who have limited experience or exposure to NDT.

Joyce A. Vipond OTR/L, is an occupational therapist working and Children’s Therapy unit with more than 12 years of pediatric experience. She is NDT-trained and has a special interest in sensory integration and upper extremity orthotics. She is currently exploring the use of the DIR ™; foor time model with children with neurological and cognitive disorders.

Sara Kerrick, PT, is a physical therapist at Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy Unit with more than 26 years of pediatric experience. NDT-trained, Sara has a master’s degree in rehabilitation medicine with an emphasis on pediatric physical therapy from the University of Washington. She has a special interest in cognitive functioning and the impact on mobility.
