COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Floortime™ is an exciting intervention technique for children with difficulties in relating and communicating . It is a playful approach designed to focus on improving a child’s emotional development thereby increasing his/her ability to interact with the world.

A variety of children can benefit from this approach including those with autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, speech and language deficits, Downs syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and developmental delays, etc.

The intervention technique of FloortimeTM is used under the overall DIR® Model. The DIR® Model is a comprehensive system used to assess and plan for the needs of children with developmental delays. The “D” stands for Developmental Level of the child, the “I” stand for Individual Differences of the child and the “R” stands for Relationships-the child’s ability to develop relationships with caregivers, siblings and peers

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • Participants will have an understanding of key elements of Floortime and the DIR Model of Intervention
  • Participants will be able to identify the six functional emotional developmental levels
  • Participants will understand the basic principles of Floortime and how to integrate these ideas into a home program

PRESENTORS: Dawn Heino, OTR/L

Dawn Heino, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit. She has worked as a Pediatric OT for 23 years in a variety of settings including: neonatal and pediatric intensive care, general acute pediatrics, pediatric rehabilitation, home health care, out-patient clinical settings including a feeding clinic, neonatal follow-up, early intervention and school based therapy services. She has had extensive training and experience working with children with disabilities including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dawn has just completed her certification in DIR®/Floortime™.

Intended Audience:

Family members and caregivers working with children with developmental disabilities. Class size is limited to 48 participants
