Enhancing Functional Outcomes in Children Using the DIR®/Floortime™ Model

Course Description:
DIR®/Floortime™is an exciting intervention approach focusing on improving emotional development for children with challenges in relating and communicating. The playful intervention technique of Floortime™ is used under the overall DIR® Model, which is a comprehensive system to assess and plan for the needs of children with developmental issues. The highly successful approach was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan. Through case studies, participants will learn how to implement this technique with a variety of children.
Objectives:
- Identify common features of autism and other challenges of relating and communicating
- Identify the key features of relationship-based approaches
- Explore 6 Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities (FEDCs) in the DIR® model and potential challenges that children face at each capacity
- Understand the "I" in DIR - individual differences and how health, sensory processing, and regulatory challenges can impact a child's development
- Discuss key principles and basic strategies of Floortime
- Understand the role of relationship and family in the DIR® model
- Understand the essential role of affect as it is related to the D, the I, and the R
Intended Audience:
This course is designed for professionals working with children with special needs who have challenges in the areas of relating and communicating including: occupational, speech, and physical therapists, psychologists, mental health practitioners, educators, and social workers.

Presenter
Dawn Heino, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist at the Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy Unit. She has worked as a Pediatric OT for 24 years and is a highly regarded clinician with extensive experience in a variety of settings including: neonatal and pediatric intensive care, general acute pediatrics, pediatric rehabilitation, home health care, out-patient clinical settings including a feeding clinic, neonatal follow-up, early intervention and school based therapy services. She has extensive training working with children with a variety of disabilities including those with autism spectrum disorders. Dawn is certified in the DIR®/Floortime™ Model through the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders. The DIR®/Floortime™ Model has helped her to provide a much richer and more comprehensive intervention approach for children resulting in patients achieving a higher level of function and she is excited to share it.
