Sensory Integration - 4 hour Parent Class

March 23, 2013 (Saturday), 9:00AM - 1:00PM

Course Description:

This half day course is designed to help parents gain a better understanding of sensory integration and how it affects their child’s daily life. Parents will learn basic therapeutic approaches that are used to treat sensory integration dysfunction, thereby improving their child’s participation in daily life activities. These intervention techniques involve parent and child coaching, direct one to one intervention, home programming and parent self study.

Course Objectives:

- Participants will have an understanding of sensory integration

- Participants will have an understanding of how sensory integration affects their child’s daily life

- Participants will have an understanding of therapeutic approaches that may be used to treat sensory integrations dysfunction

Presentors:

Brandi Livengood, OTR/L and Elissa Dykman, OTR/L

Brandi Livengood, OTR/L, graduated from Texas Women's University's occupational therapy program. She has been an occupational therapist for 13 years and has been at CTU for 9 years. She enjoys working with children with a variety of needs and diagnoses, including (but not limited to) those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, hearing impairments, feeding difficulties, and sensory integration dysfunction. She has recently attended formal continuing education classes on topics including social thinking/ social skills development, issues related to typically developing children with a special needs sibling, and pediatric feeding.

Elissa Dykman, OTR/L is a graduate of the University of Washington psychology undergradutate program and the University of Puget Sound occupational therapy graduate program. She has worked at Children’s Therapy Unit for almost 2 years. She enjoys working with children with children with a variety of needs and diagnoses, including (but not limited to) those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, physical disabilities, and sensory integration dysfunction. She has recently attended formal continuing education classes on topics including social thinking/ social skills development, neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), pediatric feeding.

Intended Audience:

Family members and caregivers working with children with developmental disabilities. Class size is limited to 48 participants
