Comprehensive Diabetes Education

Diabetes School consists of three classes spread over one month to allow time to achieve personal goals in managing diabetes. A follow-up session is offered three months after completion of this program.

Program topics include:

  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Signs/symptoms and treatment of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
  • Treatment options and diabetes medications
  • Preventing complications and foot care
  • Carbohydrate counting and fat budgeting
  • Label reading and dining out
  • Importance of fiber and balancing sodium

A personalized meal plan is provided for class participants.

In addition to the Diabetes School, Good Samaritan offers other related services including:

  • Gestational diabetes class
  • Individual Instruction with a nurse, dietitian, or pharmacist
  • Insulin pump program
  • Continuous glucose monitoring
  • Injectable diabetes medication
  • Intensive diabetes management

Experts In Our Field

The Good Samaritan Diabetes and Nutrition Clinic's team of registered nurses, registered dietitians, and pharmacists, most of whom are certified diabetes educators, provide comprehensive and individualized education. Our program has been awarded national recognition by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), providing formal acknowledgment that our patient education meets the national standards for diabetes education programs.

Nutrition Clinic

At the Good Samaritan Nutrition Clinic, registered dietitians provide an individualized program that may include a meal plan, steps toward a well-balanced diet, food preparation, label reading, specific suggestions for eating out, eating on the run, or body composition testing. Patients are referred to the Nutrition Clinic for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Weight control/obesity
  • Underweight/poor weight gain
  • High cholesterol/triglycerides
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Pre-diabetes/glucose intolerance
  • Nutrition during pregnancy
  • Celiac sprue
  • Food allergies

Our programs do require a referral from a patient's primary care provider.

Does Insurance Cover These Programs?

In general, most insurance companies cover diabetes education. We encourage you to contact your insurance company regarding your coverage for our programs. Costs vary depending on the services provided.
