Employee Testimonial: Diane

Job/Position: RN, Certified rehab nurse

How long with organization: 18 years

Explain what you do
“I am a registered nurse, certified in rehabilitation nursing. I work in the Good Samaritan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. Our unit is a 40-bed inpatient rehab program that serves people who have suffered catastrophic illnesses or injuries. I work as a unit charge nurse and primary care nurse."

When and why did you choose a career in healthcare?
“When I was a young adult, I worked as a medical office assistant. When I went back to college, I knew that I wanted a career in the medical field that would offer me job security and personal satisfaction, so I just naturally chose nursing!"

How does your work here meet your personal needs and maintain a home/work balance in your life?
“I have the chance to work with a highly talented and committed group of professionals on an interdisciplinary team, and the work here is truly patient-focused and outcome-oriented. Most of all, the personal satisfaction that I am able to experience on a daily basis…having the opportunity to personally participate in events that dramatically improve a patient’s life and future independence. The hospital is close to home, allowing me to take advantage of time away from work without a long commute. The hospital is committed to their employees and family life."

Why do you enjoy living in the Seattle-Puyallup area? What recreational activities do you enjoy?
“I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and believe it is one of the most beautiful areas in the country. I enjoy gardening, golfing, skiing, walking the ocean beaches and hiking in the mountains. This area has it all. Puyallup is a small community, with Seattle offering every cultural event imaginable not far away."

Why would you recommend Good Samaritan to someone considering applying for a job here?
“Good Samaritan is a progressive organization. It is a smaller community hospital, everyone knows everyone and truly feels like a member of the Good Samaritan family. Also, with the shared governance concept, the professional nurse can serve on councils that address nursing practice issues; these include the Nurse Practice Counsel and the Unit Based Counsel. Nursing administration at Good Samaritan is very education-oriented and I believe encourages, challenges and nurtures each individual nurse to develop to his or her greatest professional potential."
