Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure to correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States today.
Your Personal Consultation
When you sit down for your personal, confidential consultation, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from eyelid surgery. This will help Dr. Rooney understand your expectations and determine if they realistically can be achieved.
About the Procedure
Under general anesthesia, an incision follows the natural fold of the upper eyelids and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the existing creases. Excess fat and skin are removed and fine sutures are used to close the incisions, minimizing the visibility of a scar. Because the incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelids, it will be well camouflaged when healed. Upper eyelid surgery is performed under a local or with a mild “twilight anesthesia” with an intravenous of oral sedative.
For lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made in an inconspicuous site just below the lower lashes. Excess skin and fat are removed and the incision is closed with fine sutures. This surgery is typically performed under mild “twilight anesthesia.” Puffiness in the lower eyelids is caused primarily by excess fat and usually is corrected by a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The incision in this procedure is made inside the lower eyelid and excess fatty material is removed. The sutures used to close this type of incision are invisible and also are self-dissolving. There is no scarring, since the incision is inside the eyelid.
Upper and lower eyelid surgery is performed at the same time to achieve maximum improvement in the appearance of the eyes.
Recovery and Beyond
There is little or no pain following surgery. For the first 48 hours following surgery, cold compresses should be applied to the eye area to reduce swelling and bruising. Most patients can resume normal activity two days after the procedure. Patients can't wear contact lenses for about two weeks, since the eyelids may be stiff and sore. Make-up may be worn after about 10 days. The resulting hairline scars, which follow the natural contour of the eyelids, tend to fade in about two months. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for one week. Sutures are removed one week after surgery.
Aesthetic eyelid surgery can make you look more rested, refreshed and alert. And while the aging process continues, patients usually are happy with their appearance for many years following eyelid surgery.
Understanding the Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from blepharoplasty are infrequent. Every year, many people undergo successful eyelid surgery, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. These issues will be discussed during your consultation.
