Facial Implants

Facial implants can create remarkable changes by adding balance and definition to underdeveloped features and improving the contours of the face. Facial implants often are used on the chin and cheeks to bring features into proportion and give a lift to people whose faces look aged, tired or sunken.

Facial implants are used to enhance specific areas of the face, such as the cheekbones, or to bring balance to the face by improving the size and shape of the chin. The procedures often are combined with other enhancements. Chin implants often are used with rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to help balance the facial features. Cheek implants may be combined with a facelift to help prevent sagging skin and produce a more youthful appearance.

Are Facial Implants for You?

Chin Augmentation (genioplasty)
often can produce a dramatic and gratifying outcome. The goal of the procedure is to balance the profile by enhancing a weak chin and improving overall facial harmony. Chin augmentation is accomplished by placing a synthetic implant over the chin to improve the balance between the chin and the rest of the face. The implant sits directly on the top of the bone and feels like an extension of the bone itself.

While under a mild “twilight anesthesia,” chin implants are inserted through a small incision in the natural crease under the chin.

There is some discomfort after the surgery for which medication is prescribed. A pressure dressing is placed overnight, but typically nothing else needs to be worn afterward. Swelling will improve over four to five days, by which time most patients are able to return to work and social activities. It is recommended to avoid chewing hard foods for about a week.

Cheek Augmentation can help restore the well-formed cheekbones you used to have when you were young, or if you have never had well-defined cheekbones, cheek implants may give your face the desired contour of higher cheekbones. Cheek implants are made in various shapes and sizes, depending on the area to be augmented.

There are two types of cheek implants. A malar implant results in more prominent or high cheekbones, whereas a submalar implant corrects the sunken cheek appearance. Both are performed under mild “twilight anesthesia” through tiny incisions placed inside the mouth under the upper lip on each side.

To allow swelling to recede, healing time for cheek augmentation is typically three to five days. There is usually no bruising. The implants are made of a soft silastic material that carries no risk of rejection, and these anatomical implants produce a very natural appearance.

Your Personal Consultation
When you sit down for your personal, confidential consultation, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from a facial implant. This will help Dr. Rooney understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved.

Understanding the Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from facial implants are infrequent. Every year, many people undergo successful implant procedures, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. These issues will be discussed during your consultation.
