Forehead Lift
In a forehead lift, the
muscles and tissues that cause the furrowing or drooping are removed or
altered to smooth the forehead, raise the eyebrows and minimize frown
lines.
Is a Forehead Lift for You?
The
procedure is most commonly done on people who are 40 to 60 years of age
who wish to slow the signs of aging. Many patients who are concerned
about fullness of the upper eyelids can benefit from a forehead lift.
Your Personal Consultation
When
you sit down for your personal, confidential consultation, you will be
asked about the results you would like to achieve from a forehead lift.
This will help Dr. Rooney understand your expectations and determine
whether they can be realistically achieved.
About the Procedure
In
many instances, an incision is made across the top of the scalp,
beginning above the ears and hidden within the hair. The incision may
be placed at the front of the hairline or, in some cases, toward the
middle of the scalp, and is designed to be inconspicuous when healed.
Through the incision, the parts of the muscles that are causing the
wrinkling and frown lines can be modified or removed.
Another
forehead lift technique utilizes an endoscope, a long thin tube with a
light on the end, attached to a video camera. An endoscope is then
inserted through a small incision allowing the surgeon to see the
muscles and tissues underneath. In a different incision, the surgeon
inserts another instrument that lifts the forehead skin. Excess tissue
and fat are then removed and, if necessary, muscles are realigned.
Recovery and Beyond
After
a forehead lift, most patients are able to walk around within a day or
two and can return to work seven to 10 days after surgery. Patients
will likely feel numbness and temporary discomfort at the site of
surgery, which can be controlled with medication.
Within
two to three months, the most visible signs of surgery should
completely fade. In the meantime, make-up can be used to cover minor
swelling and bruising.
Most patients who undergo forehead lift
surgery are pleased with the results and appear much younger and more
rested. Since the aging process continues, the effects of the surgery
will diminish as the years pass, just as after any other cosmetic
procedure.
Understanding the Risks
Fortunately,
significant complications from forehead lift surgery are infrequent.
Every year many people undergo successful forehead lift surgery,
experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Anyone
considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and
the risks. These issues will be discussed during your consultation.
