The High-Risk Care Team
If you or your baby experience complications during your pregnancy or delivery, you’ll have a highly skilled team on your side. The High-Risk team at Tacoma General Hospital includes a full complement of subspecialty care professionals. All are committed to communication and coordination, and to providing the best possible care for moms and babies with special needs.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists. These obstetrician-gynecologists are specially trained and highly experienced in the area of very high-risk pregnancies and births. They work in consultation with your OB/GYN physician or family practice obstetrician.
Neonatologists. These specialists are specially trained and highly experienced in providing care for very ill or premature babies. During and after delivery, they lead the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team, and often consult on high-risk prenatal care before the baby is born. And since complications can occur unexpectedly during labor and delivery, neonatologists are on site 24 hours a day.
Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. NNPs are nurses who have completed advanced training and are highly experienced in caring for premature babies.
Pediatric Subspecialty Physicians. Our subspecialists have extensive training and certification in a select pediatric area. This includes the full range of experts required for comprehensive NICU care: pediatric cardiologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists, pulmonologists and other subspecialists.
Nurses, Therapists and Support Staff. Our critical care team of nurses and respiratory therapists is prepared for any eventuality during and after your delivery. Besides these professionals, there are many more individuals working behind the scenes, including pediatric radiologists, pharmacy specialists, lab and radiology staff, and others with the necessary skills to provide optimal care for you and your baby.
