MultiCare Health System

Internet Point of Care

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the Internet Point of Care CME is to provide structured, self-directed, online learning for physicians on topics relevant to their clinical practice. The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify practice-based knowledge needs

2. Complete extensive background research on a clinical question

3. Reinforce clinical decisions through review of published evidence

4. Learn new information related to clinical practice

5. Translate knowledge into professional practice

6. Improve patient care by utilizing current published evidence

Target Audience

MultiCare and Good Samaritan affiliated staff physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with internet access.

Expected Results

The physician should be able to select and use appropriate professional, unbiased, peer reviewed literature to answer self-identified clinical questions, to reinforce clinical decisions, to learn new information related to his/her clinical practice and to translate that knowledge into improved patient care.

Needs Assessment

The clinical questions will be self-identified knowledge needs. The questions may be based on:

1. A rare condition

2. A condition not managed recently by the physician

3. A diagnostic dilemma

4. New clinical information

5. Controversial clinical issues

Teaching Methods

The teaching method will consist of self-directed learning of a self-identified clinical question through use of evidence-based medical databases that are accessible through the hospital medical library and CME webpages. The learner will identify and consult relevant sources and describe the application of his/her findings to practice.

Databases to be Utilized

Good Samaritan: EBM Reviews through UpToDate, Ovid Full Text, and PubMed. MHS: EBM Reviews through the Wagner Library's online databases: Up-To-Date, DynaMed, PubMed Medline, and the OVID databases including Ovid Medline.

Stands of Commercial Support and Disclosure

Databases have been selected to ensure independence, lack of commercial bias and valid content. The planners of this activity have no financial affiliations relevant to the content. Commercial grants will not be solicited for this activity.
