KyphoplastyOne of the most innovative new spinal procedures being pioneered at MultiCare is kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate much of the pain caused by compression fractures. Good Samaritan was the first facility in Pierce County to offer this new treatment for osteoporosis.
In kyphoplasty, a balloon is inserted into the collapsed vertebrae and a cavity created that is then filled with bone cement. If the condition is caught early enough, kyphoplasty may reduce the fracture by restoring the height of the collapsed vertebrae. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty also stabilizes the fracture, restores height and reduces deformity.
