MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital President Glenn Kasman, center right, presents the 2012 Business Innovations award to staff members at East Pierce Family Medicine.
Chamber recognizes Good Samaritan Hospital for innovation
The Puyallup/Sumner Chamber presented the 2012 Business Innovations award to MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital for the new family medicine residency training program at East Pierce Family Medicine.
"The goal of the program is to provide a strong clinical education to our residents, to provide primary care to our community, and to ultimately retain program graduates within our community,” said Glenn Kasman, president of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital. “Our success will be measured by the patients who come to our practice, and the local residents who are helped by our graduates. Both will take time to measure, but the benefits throughout east Pierce County will be realized for years to come.”
The new clinic will provide a three-year family medicine residency training program, planning to accept six residents each year with a full roster of 18 residents by 2014. The hope is that East Pierce Family Medicine residents will remain in the area to practice as physicians. In the United States, a shortage of about 63,000 physicians is projected by 2015, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, with greater shortages projected on the horizon — 91,500 in 2020 and 130,600 in 2025.
For an appointment, the clinic can be reached at 253-697-1420. For information on the residency program, call 253-697-5757.
