Columbia Bank employees win Million Minute Mission
Employees at Columbia Bank won the Million Minute Mission Award for logging the most minutes of physical activity in the MultiCare Center for Healthy Living Million Minute Mission fitness event.
The Center for Healthy Living presented Columbia Bank with the award on Aug. 11.
“Winning this award gives our employees the encouragement to continue living a healthier lifestyle,” said Melanie Dressel, President and CEO of Columbia Bank.
Million Minute Mission is a four-month-long program that encourages children and adults in Pierce County to be physically active and track online the duration of their daily activity. The goal of the Mission was for participants to log in millions of minutes worth of physical activity between Jan. 28 and June 12.
Columbia Bank’s 98 participating employees collectively logged 347,845 minutes, 20 percent of all minutes accumulated in the program.
“Thanks to the good work of MultiCare, we know the risk of health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments are greatly reduced with simply 30 to 60 minutes of moderate physical activity, at least five days a week,” Dressel said. “As a result, our organization will have fewer problems with absenteeism, as well as lowered health care costs.”
The Mission is part of Pierce County Gets Fit, a health initiative intended to increase fitness and promote healthy living. The initiative was created by MultiCare, the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce County, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
“The goal of the Million Minute Mission is to help combat the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke in Pierce County by promoting a physically active lifestyle for our residents,” said Trixy Dorn, community events & program coordinator for MultiCare Center for Healthy Living.
This is the fifth year for the Million Minute Mission. Last year’s winner was the YMCA in Gig Harbor.
The Center for Healthy Living’s mission is to promote the health and wellness of our community by helping individuals, families and businesses to make healthy choices through programs in nutrition, physical activity, weight management, tobacco cessation, corporate wellness programming, health screenings and assessments.
