Mary Bridge, Good Samaritan win WSHA 'Best Hands on Care Award'

Two MultiCare hospitals have earned the 2011 “Best Hands on Care Award” from the Washington State Hospital Association.
The award, announced at WSHA's annual meeting Oct. 12-13 in Seattle, recognizes MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center in Tacoma and MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup for their efforts to ensure proper hand hygiene to decrease the spread of infection.
The hospitals received the award because of their exemplary rates of hand hygiene, their evidence-based system of measuring usage of soap and sanitizer, and for the way usage rates compare to the number of patients at the hospitals. Winners also had to achieve high rates of health care worker flu immunizations and top marks on a number of infection prevention indicators.
MultiCare hospitals were the only medical facilities in the South Sound to be recognized for their hand hygiene. MultiCare hospitals have won the "Best Hands-on Care Award" every year since the honor was created in 2007.
MultiCare’s leadership in the hand-hygiene campaign is part of a collaborative effort among hospitals in Washington state to reduce preventable hospital acquired infections. The program began in 2005 as the nation’s first statewide effort to bring hospitals together to share strategies for improving hand hygiene.
Hand washing is critical to the prevention of hospital-acquired infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The simple act of proper hand washing or hand sanitizing can reduce the spread of infection by 25 percent.
Throughout the state, nine hospitals were recognized:
- MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital, Puyallup.
- MultiCare Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Center, Tacoma.
- Othello Community Hospital, Othello.
- PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, Bellingham.
- PMH Medical Center, Prosser.
- Providence Mount Carmel Hospital, Colville.
- Snoqualmie Community Hospital and Clinics, Snoqualmie.
- Sunnyside Community Hospital & Clinics, Sunnyside.
- Swedish Medical Center / Cherry Hill Campus, Seattle.
