“Graham Couple have the first Pierce County baby of 2013”

Family members say Kathy and Jason Bates of Graham were meant to be parents. And in the wee hours of the new year, they got their wish with the arrival of Sydney Lee Bates. She arrived at 1:46 a.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. She weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces. Among all of Pierce County’s major medical facilities, Sydney earned the honors as Pierce County’s earliest arrival of 2013.

“Gig Harbor nurse builds patient trust one LEGO brick at a time”

Young patients visiting the Mary Bridge Child Express in Gig Harbor may feel a little more at ease in the urgent care center, thanks to Amy McGlinchy, R.N., B.S.N. She carries other titles that may not require a degree, but are just as important: LEGO lady, Popcicle lady and stuffed animal lady. A pediatric nurse, McGlinchy sees children on a routine basis. But for her patients, a trip to the urgent care center is anything but routine.

“Q&A: Nurse has celebrated New Year’s Eve with new life for 20 years at birth center”

Instead of anticipating the New Year’s ball drop Monday night, Patsy Pitts will ring in 2013 by being on the lookout for women in labor. She’s been a staff nurse at the birth center of Tacoma General Hospital for about 20 years, and has worked almost every New Year’s Eve during that time. That’s long enough that she’s starting to see babies she’s cared for having babies of their own. Pitts helped with some of the first infants of the year at different hospitals where she worked since the 1970s. She will be working the holiday again this year, starting at 7 p.m., to welcome into the world some of the South Sound’s first babies of 2013.

    “Santa Silvia delivers more toys”

In the weeks before Christmas, Silvia Tapia gathered toys at the Varsity Grill. The downtown restaurant and sports bar was the home base for her toy drive. Each year, since 1999, Tapia rallies her community for this toy drive and then delivers gifts to children at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. It is for this reason that she is called Santa Silvia. Monday, Dec. 24, Santa Silvia boarded her sleigh - well, really, it was more like a wagon since sleighs don't fit in hospitals - and headed to Mary Bridge.

    “South Sound leaders sound off”

Florence Chang, Executive Vice President, MultiCare Health System

“This year, MultiCare proudly added two new facilities — MultiCare Auburn Medical Center and MultiCare Covington Emergency Department — that provide expanded access to care for our patients in South King County. We also were thrilled to receive further recognition of the outstanding quality we provide to patients when MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital was named a Top Hospital by Leapfrog. MultiCare Allenmore, MultiCare Good Samaritan and MultiCare Tacoma General hospitals also were honored by Leapfrog with “A” ratings for their commitment to quality.

We worked to better connect with our patients through our electronic medical record patient portal, increasing the number of people using MyChart by more than 20 percent. And we continued our work to provide better health care and better service at a lower cost to the community.”
