After nearly 20 years serving the community, MultiCare Health System today announced plans to expand services in Covington.

MultiCare will build a hospital with a 24-hour Emergency Department, more health care services and in-patient adult and pediatric beds adjacent to the Covington MultiCare Clinic.

The addition would provide residents of communities in South King County with access to emergency medical care and new services including a Women’s and Children’s Center, Labor and Delivery department and expanded Surgical Services.

“MultiCare has been helping families in South King County at our Covington Clinic for many years. We are excited to provide our neighbors with more access to the care they need in their community,” said Hugh Kodama, Administrator of the Covington MultiCare Clinic.

MultiCare last week sent a Letter of Intent to the Washington State Department of Health saying the health care provider wants to expand services in Covington. MultiCare will file a Certificate of Need with the health department in the coming weeks detailing its plans and the reasons the new health care services are needed.

The hospital beds would allow for minimally invasive surgical services in orthopedics, general surgery, urology and other areas. Mary Bridge pediatric specialists also will bring their expertise to the community.

“This hospital will be innovative, providing patients with the care they will need well into the future,” Kodama said. “With MultiCare’s electronic health record and telemedicine capabilities, the new hospital will provide cutting edge technology, such as state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgeries.”

The medical center would expand in phases:

    • The first phase of the project includes the new 24-hour Emergency Department.

    • The second phase will add hospital beds and Women and Children’s services including Labor and Delivery.

The Covington clinic currently includes Primary Care, Specialists, Urgent Care, Day Surgery, a Heart Center and other health care services. Covington MultiCare serves 30,000 patients a year at the Urgent Care clinic.
