MultiCare's Steam Plant Awarded for Best Industrial Structure
TACOMA, WA- Northwest Construction Magazine recently completed the judging process for its Best of 2009 awards competition and has awarded MultiCare’s Steam Plant with the Best Industrial structure award.
The annual contest recognizes construction and design excellence in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. This year’s competition received a record-breaking number of entries; eighty-five projects vied for honors, the most ever received.
Opened in March, the steam plant, located adjacent to historic Wright Park in Tacoma, provides MultiCare’s Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals with sterilization, heat, energy and oxygen supply needs, and furnishes backup power in the event of an emergency. It is also designed to cut harmful emissions in the area by up to 30 percent over the previous facility.
The exterior of the Boiler Plant pays homage to inventors and scientists who were responsible for many of the advances made in modern physics and engineering. The use of red brick construction matches surrounding buildings and glass windows reflect the trees and colors of Wright Park.
Three boilers, which are fueled by natural gas, a clean-burning fuel, are housed in the new building. Water is heated by natural gas, and the resulting steam is piped underground and throughout the hospital campus to sterilize equipment and provide heat. The facility also includes three emergency generators to power the surrounding campus during power outages and disasters.
A panel of industry experts from both states judged the entries. Eligible projects were completed between Sept. 1, 2008, and Sept. 1, 2009.
The winning projects will be honored at an awards breakfast December 11 at the 7:30 a.m. at the Seattle Waterfront Marriott.
