Praise for Dr. Law: 'He talked to me like a person, not a chart'

Michael Marusich didn’t want to go to the doctor: He was tired of being treated like a number. But when a good friend recommended Dr. David E. Law at MultiCare Internal Medicine in Tacoma, Marusich agreed to give him a chance. That decision may have saved his life.

At his first appointment, Marusich was surprised that Dr. Law sat down and talked to him about his lifestyle, eating habits and exercise.

“He actually took the time to get to know me," Marusich said. "He talked to me like a person, not a chart.”

But the doctor had some bad news for his new patient: Routine blood work had shown his blood sugar and other tests were not normal. Marusich was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

Rather than leave him feeling distraught, Dr. Law put things into perspective for Marusich.

“We had a heart to heart," Marusich said. "He told me ‘I’m concerned we’re getting a late start, but we can do this.’”

Marusich left the office with information about a healthful diet, exercise and options for drug therapies.

“It’s important that people see their health care provider on a regular basis so they can receive routine tests that help us catch conditions like diabetes, heart disease and various cancers,” Dr. Law said. “It is easier for us to treat and manage these conditions when we get ahead of them.”

Within days, Marusich was back to meet with the MultiCare Center for Diabetes Education, where he was met with a staff that went the distance to help him understand how to care for himself.

“I was very detailed in my search about diabetes and I had some pretty hard questions,” he said. “If they didn’t know the answer, they told me – but they would get me the answer before I left, each time.”

Marusich credits that level of care with the drastic improvement he’s achieved in his health since he was diagnosed in August 2012. He’s lost 35 pounds, his blood sugar and other tests are within normal guidelines, and he’s been able to reduce the amount of diabetes medication he’s taking.

“My life has literally turned around,” he says. “It’s been phenomenal.”
