Radiation Oncology Coming to Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor MultiCare Medical Park to offer latest in cancer treatment and technology
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Todd Kelley (253) 403-1716
Gig Harbor, WA – MultiCare Health System will open Gig Harbor’s first radiation oncology clinic in January 2009. This adds a critical component to MultiCare’s comprehensive oncology services available in Gig Harbor.
Radiation therapy is commonly prescribed for patients with cancer. For patients in need of radiation therapy, MultiCare will install a Varian iX® Linear Accelerator on the ground floor of the MultiCare facility in Gig Harbor. This system gives patients a precise, targeted dose of radiation to a tumor or lesion, which eliminates the side effects usually associated with radiation therapy. This technology will enable patients to stay in Gig Harbor for their treatments, often in a few short sessions, allowing them to schedule visits at their convenience and return to work the same day.
“Expanding service offerings to include radiation oncology allows us to provide Gig Harbor patients comprehensive, easily accessible cancer treatment options so residents don’t have to cross the bridge for care,” says David Nicewonger, Administrator of Oncology for MultiCare Health System. “With radiation oncology services in Gig Harbor, it allows us to use a critical tool in the fight against cancer.”
Opened in 2005, MultiCare Regional Cancer Center’s oncology clinic in Gig Harbor was the first to offer medical oncology in Gig Harbor. The MultiCare Regional Cancer Center was founded in 1982 and offers the latest and most advanced diagnostics and cancer treatments available. From innovative technology to more precise radiation treatments, MultiCare is the only health system in the South Sound offering a unique combination of new and innovative methods, including surgical robotics, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and image-guided radiation therapy.
The MultiCare Regional Cancer Center also recently became a network affiliate of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, adding five South Sound locations to the SCCA network, including the MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park. MultiCare is the only health system in the South Sound to partner with the SCCA.
MultiCare is a leading-edge, integrated health organization made up of four hospitals, numerous primary care and urgent care clinics, multi-specialty centers, Hospice and Home Health services, and many other services. A not-for-profit organization based in Tacoma, Washington since 1882, MultiCare has grown over the years in response to community needs. Today we are the area's largest provider of health care services, serving patients at 93 locations in Pierce, South King, Kitsap and Thurston counties.
