  • Slideshow: Nurse Camp offers hands-on lesson in health care

A group of 96 students from 36 high schools participated in the ninth-annual MultiCare Nurse Camp this week at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and throughout the community.

During the five-day camp that gives students an inside look at careers in health care, students spend time in departments at all four of MultiCare’s hospitals (Tacoma General Hospital, Allenmore Hospital, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup), visit six local colleges and universities, and participate in rotations throughout the hospitals.

MultiCare realized the need to encourage a more diverse and well-prepared health work force. In 2004 it began supporting a weeklong free day camp for area students. As well as increasing ethnic and racial diversity in health care, an increasing number of young men are considering careers in nursing, a trend MultiCare Nurse Camp encourages and supports.
