Tree designers share motivation: Everyone has a Mary Bridge story
26th annual Festival of Trees to benefit Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital
Everyone is invited to visit the 26th annual Festival of Trees, which runs through Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.
In the past 25 years, the festival has raised more than $20 million to support young patients at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center in Tacoma.
We asked 11 tree designers why they volunteer to put in so much work and effort for Festival of Trees. Here's what they said:
"Pretty much everybody you know has been to Mary Bridge. So, you, know, anything we can do to support them." -- Wendy Huber, in her 14th year, who designed the tree "Red or White?"
"My daughter was at Mary Bridge when she was three weeks old. I got to sleep in the crib with her. You can't have a good community with out a good children's hospital. I'll do this until I can't do this anymore." -- Hally Phillips, who designed the tree "Red or White?"
"There are so many families out there who benefit from these events, so it's the least I can do." -- Jeffery Weaver, who designed the tree "Island of Misfit Toys"
"I have two kids, and while I hope they never need the services of Mary Bridge, I would do anything to help." -- Theresa Wolland, a floral designer at Brown's Flowers, who designed the tree "A Winter Masquerade"
"I had my baby at Tacoma General, and I've had two friends who've had their children helped by Mary Bridge." -- Adrielle Flinders, who designed the tree "Twas a Night to Remember"
"My son was helped by Mary Bridge. Plus, we're community-minded." -- Debbie Brese, who helped work on the tree "Twas a Night to Remember"
"It's a way for our family to give back to the hospital." -- Steve Oullette, who designed the snowman-themed tree "Let's Celebrate Before I Melt"
"To give back to the kids. And it's fun. We're all from Tacoma, so we're keeping it local with the 253. A lot of the local businesses donated." -- Kim Doyle, an interior designer with BCRA, who designed the "My Heart's In 253" tree along with Denyce Cahill of BiNW.
"I first learned about Festival of Trees when I was a cheerleader with the Seahawks and we volunteered to perform. Now this is my eighth year doing a tree. I live in the Tacoma area and believe in supporting my community. I have three children and I strongly believe in supporting the hospital." -- Sarah Bryant Wilcoxsen, who designed the tree "The Taste of Tuscany" and the tablescape "Vino e Formaggio"
"I think it's important to raise money for the children's hospital and for the sick people." -- Molly Bryant, age 13, who designed a British-themed tree "Keep Calm & Carry On" that includes tickets to the One Direction show in Seattle.
"Because I love Mary Bridge. I'm grateful as a parent to not to have needed it extensively, but I have heart for those who do. I'ts the best organization. Everyone has a Mary Bridge story or has been touched by Mary Bridge in one way or another." -- Tammy Hall, in her 12th year as a designer, who designed the trees "Vietnam: An Asian Dragon Awaits" and "Merry Mukluks - North to Alaska"
