US News & World Report ranks Tacoma General among best hospitals
Only hospital in Tacoma and Pierce County to make the list
MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital ranks No. 5 on U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" list for the Seattle metropolitan area.
Tacoma General is the only hospital in Pierce County and one of only 11 hospitals in the Seattle metro area to receive the national recognition, out of 35 area hospitals considered.
Tacoma General was recognized for "high-performing specialties" gynecology and urology.
"It's no secret that all hospitals are not equal," wrote Avery Comarow, health rankings editor for U.S. News & World Report. "The special quality shared by the 152 that made it into the new 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings (out of nearly 5,000 that were considered) ... is their ability to take on and meet the most difficult challenges."
To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties.
