  • Survivor-singer-songwriter Charlie Lustman plays at Cancer Center

    With his colorful acoustic guitar and hope-filled tunes, Charlie Lustman performed this week for visitors at the MultiCare Regional Cancer Center at Tacoma General Hospital. The cancer survivor-singer-songwriter from Hawaii is on a 28-city tour.

    As a urologist I treat patients with kidney cancer. The treatment of this disease has changed radically in the past 20 years. And this week I performed a new technique that meant the patient left surgery with no tumor and a totally uncompromised kidney to show for it.

    VIDEO: Mary Bridge Children's Hospital was filled with Christmas spirit on Friday night, all thanks to one little girl, a four-year-old who is quite familiar with the hospital. Her only wish was to play Santa's helper and give gifts to children who won't make it home for the holidays.

    MultiCare leaders decided they wanted the health system to play an increasing role in advancing medicine. In 2010, they opened the MultiCare Research Institute in Tacoma. Program Director Richard Shine recently discussed the new program.
