Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Your nose is the most prominent feature on your face, and its size and shape may be your most defining facial characteristic. If you would like to improve the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty may be for you. Nasal surgery also is performed to correct functional breathing problems.
Is Rhinoplasty for You?
Rhinoplasty can re-contour the nasal profile, change the angle between the nose and upper lip and reshape the nasal tip. Alterations can be made to decrease the nasal bridge and reduce the size of the nose.
Your Personal Consultation
When you sit down for your personal, confidential consultation, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from nose reshaping. A thorough analysis of the nose and face will be performed and video imaging utilized to give you a good idea of what your nose will look like after surgery.
About the Procedure
Nasal surgery is done under a local anesthesia with an intravenous sedative. In many cases, incisions are made inside the nose where they are not visible. If the base of the nose is narrowed or the nostrils reduced, incisions are hidden in the natural crease where the nostril joins the cheek. An incision is made between the nostrils providing the surgeon excellent exposure inside of the nose.
Certain amounts of underlying bone and cartilage are removed, added to, or rearranged. Bumps in the nose can be reduced or totally eliminated. The nose can be made narrower by bringing the sides of the nose closer together. The tip of the nose can be made smaller or lifted to enhance the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
Recovery and Beyond
For one or two days following surgery, applying cold compresses to the area and keeping the head elevated can reduce swelling and bruising. There will be some subtle swelling for several months after nasal surgery.
Strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks after surgery. Typically, normal activity may be resumed within one to two weeks.
Understanding the Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from rhinoplasty are infrequent. Every year, many people have their noses reshaped, experience no major problems, and are delighted with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. Dr. Rooney will discuss these with you during your consultation.
