At MultiCare, we are committed to providing women with choices for the kind of prenatal, childbirth and gynecological care they really want. We’ve expanded our OB/GYN services to include nurse-midwifery services with a more personalized, holistic approach to childbirth and women’s healthcare.
Currently, our nurse-midwifery services are offered at MultiCare Women's Health & Wellness Center at Gig Harbor and MultiCare Women's Center - Northshore Clinic. Today you can choose to be seen by an OB/GYN or a Certified Nurse-Midwife who collaborate and see patients within the same practice.

What does a Certified Nurse-Midwife offer and how are they different from an OB/GYN physician?
Our Certified Nurse-Midwives offer women a more tailored, holistic approach to labor and delivery, within the security and safety of a fully equipped hospital setting. Like an OB/GYN physician, they perform deliveries for women who choose to not use pain medication and epidurals as well as those who do. They also provide family planning, contraceptive options and menopause management.
Unlike an OB/GYN physician, however, our Certified Nurse-Midwives do not provide care for women with high-risk pregnancies, nor do they perform c-sections or vaginal births after c-sections (VBACs). Only OB/GYN’s have the specialized training to offer that level of care.

What training does a MultiCare Certified Nurse-Midwife have?
Our Certified Nurse-Midwives are Master’s prepared and licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (ARNP) who completed additional education and training in women’s health and maternity care. They completed their Master’s degree in Midwifery with a special certification in nurse-midwifery.
