The Plan for New Emergency Departments
Imagine a loved one in need of emergency care; you need a hospital that can provide you with the best possible care in an efficient and adequate setting while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.
That’s what the expanded Emergency Departments at Tacoma General Hospital and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital will provide.
The two new Emergency Departments and Express Care Center will be more than five times the size of the existing EDs, from 13,000 to 73,500 square feet.
Highlights of the New Emergency Departments
- Tacoma General’s Emergency Department will add 6,700 square feet.
- Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Emergency Department will add 6,900 square feet.
- A new separate Express Care Center with 32 exam rooms will be added to care for those patients who have less critical medical problems.
- A dedicated trauma suite with six large bays that can privately accommodate 11 patients and house the most advanced trauma technology at the bedside.
- The new patient and family waiting areas are designed to be more spacious and comfortable. The Mary Bridge waiting area will be child-friendly featuring a special play area.
- Patient registration will take place in private exam rooms, away from public waiting areas.
- Essential services such as imaging and pharmacy will be conveniently located within the ED, reducing the need to move patients throughout the hospital.
- Each ED will have a family resource center to provide families with medical information and health education to help make informed health decisions.
- A community resource center will be available to help patients and families with services such as transportation, housing, food, clothing and social services.
- An ecumenical chapel will provide a place for families to go for spiritual support.
The expanded Emergency Departments and new Express Care Center will meet the needs of our community for many years to come. They will provide medical staff with the space and equipment needed to better care for our patients and their families.
