He completed fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Plano Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Dallas, Texas; graduated from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Service, Des Moines, Iowa; and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Coons is fluent in Spanish and enjoys a variety of outdoor sports, including skiing, golf and scuba diving.
