Women and Children's Community Expansion Project

Project Overview
MultiCare Health System is remodeling and updating the areas serving women, newborns and children at Tacoma General Hospital and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. The four-year project will add more Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds, a renovated Tacoma General Family Birth Center and an improved Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). These areas of the hospital have not been updated for more than two decades, even as the demand for these services is growing. Construction began spring/summer of 2012 and has been estimated to generate 350 local jobs during the course of the project.

Milgard and Rainier Pavilions
Two floors have been added to the top of the five-story Milgard Pavilion, which was built in 2010 and houses the Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Emergency Departments and the MultiCare Regional Cancer Center. The new sixth and seventh floors now house Mary Bridge general pediatric beds and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This completes the first phase of the three-phase women and children’s services expansion project, “Building Dreams Together,” that is expected to last through 2015.
