Rainier Pavillion Expansion Project
New birth center, expanded NICU, new adult inpatient rooms opens at Tacoma General Hospital
The six-story, 105,929-square-foot Rainier Pavilion is part of a $192 million project to expand services for women, newborns and children at Tacoma General Hospital and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Wash. The departments will transition into the new areas by the end of March 2014.
Tacoma General’s NICU will feature 51 private rooms that will comfortably accommodate families who are critical partners in caring for fragile newborns. One room is even designed for twins or multiples.
Both the NICU and the Family Birth Center are connected to MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, southwest Washington’s only pediatric hospital.
The first phase of this project opened in May 2013, when two inpatient floors, including a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, were added to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. The two floors totaling 47,537 square feet were added atop the Milgard Pavilion on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
After the new birth center and NICU move to the new building, the project will wrap up with a refresh and remodel of the vacated spaces.
When the final phase of the project is complete, the project will have added 153,466 square feet of new space and 144,835 square feet of renovated space.
Since the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital in 1882, MultiCare’s history has been defined by the ability to respond to the health care needs of our community. The early hospital’s growth was attributed to many of the same issues that drive today’s decisions: higher standards for safety, better technology for patients, and increased comfort and privacy for families.
Building Dreams Together
The expansion is supported by Building Dreams Together: The MultiCare Campaign for Healthy Children. This campaign will help build the facilities, buy the equipment and make the investments necessary to care for fragile babies and vulnerable children right here in our community.
