Handmade quilts 'a touch of home' for children at Mary Bridge
A generous gift of quilts and other handmade items added a touch of warmth for young visitors at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center in Tacoma.
About a dozen women created and delivered the quilts, blankets, hats, pillowcases and bags, which brought some color and cheer to an otherwise rainy day.
Jennifer Passage, 6, and her sister Elizabeth, 10, beamed with excitement as they each picked out a quilt and a pillowcase in the lobby of the Mary Bridge Health Center. Their mother, Pam, said the quilts will be the perfect travel companion for an upcoming three-day train trip to visit grandparents.
“When you see that smile on that little girl’s face, that’s what it’s all about,” said Kari Wilkinson, who crafted some of the items.
The smiles also came from the donors, who were happy to watch their gifts bring joy to the children.
“It warms your heart,” said Virda Lawrence, who also contributed.
The quilts and other stitched items were made by women in the Humanitarian Group from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Key Center and Minter Creek wards. They made the trip to Tacoma to deliver their creations, which will be shared with children at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center throughout the winter.
“These beautiful quilts and blankets help bring a touch of home to the hospital, and provide comfort and warmth during the holiday season,” said Rachel McCrary, a Certified Child Life Specialist who works closely with children during their visits to Mary Bridge.
Mady Murrey, RN, Chief Operating Officer of Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center, thanked the women for their generous contributions.
Earlier this month, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center was named a Top Children's Hospital by the Leapfrog Group for providing the safest and highest quality care to pediatric patients. Mary Bridge is the only pediatric hospital in the Pacific Northwest and one of only 12 children’s hospitals in the country to receive this recognition.
