MultiCare moms share favorite baby food recipes
Homemade baby food can be cheaper, and just as (if not more!) nutritious than store-bought baby food. We asked moms at a recent baby food-themed gathering of the MultiCare Mom and Baby Support Group to share some of their favorite recipes.
Group member Julie Nolde says she began experimenting with making her own baby food with her daughter Chloe (now 27 months). By the time twins Logan and Sadie (now 8.5 months) came along, she had it down to a science.
Nolde, who spent years as a cook and caterer, says she wasn't impressed with the selection of recipes available online, so started creating her own.
"I went with flavor combinations that I know work in grown-up life," she said.
Nolde says almost everything is good if you're using fresh ingredients. She visits the Puyallup Farmers' Market every week to stock up on local, organic produce.

½ cup organic oats
4 dried apricots
1 cup boiling water
Layer banana, apricots and oatmeal. Pour boiling water over the top and let sit 5 minutes. Blend. Add water to thin. Will thicken upon standing.
2 beets - peeled and steamed
2 tablespoons vanilla yogurt
1 tsp coconut oil (optional)
Combine all and blend. Reserve some cooking liquid to thin.
Julie’s Sweet Potato:
½ sweet potato - peeled and steamed
1 tsp coconut oil (optional)
Combine all and blend. Thin with water or breast milk.
Julie’s Purple Potatoes:
1 cup purple potatoes – steamed
1 plum – pit removed and steamed
Julie’s Golden Beets:
2 golden beets – peeled and steamed
2 apricots – pits removed
Blend well. Reserve some cooking liquid to thin.
The Eliminator (Julie)
6” zucchini – sliced thin
½ small apple – peeled and sliced thin
Sauté with a bit of water. Blend.
Italian Medley (Julie)
½ cooked whole wheat pasta or brown rice
1 roma tomato – peeled (skin comes off easily when scored and steamed)
½ zucchini – sliced thin
3 dried apricots
¼ tsp minced onion
Small handful spinach leaves
½ cup boiling water
Combine and steam. Blend with pasta. Thin with water you steamed with.
¼ cup water
½ cup pitted cherries
1 small apple – peeled and diced
Bring the water to a boil in a sauce pan, then add the diced apples. Lower the heat and simmer for 1 minute. Add cherries and simmer for another 3 minutes. Add yogurt and puree in a blender.
Renee's Organic Carrots, Peas and Broccoli
Water or breast milk
Steam veggies for 20 minutes. Puree with water or breast milk.
Marissa's Baby Muffins
1 mashed banana
1/4 cup yogurt
1/2 cup rice flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon applesauce (Or any fruit purée)
2 1/2 tablespoon rice cereal
2 tablespoon olive oil
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mash the bananas first, then add the egg, olive oil, yogurt, and the applesauce.
Mix the baking soda and cinnamon with the flour and rice cereal in a separate bowl and make a well in the center.
Pour the banana mixture into the well
Spray muffin pan with oil and fill each cup 2/3 full.
Bake for 20-25 minutes
Teagan’s peach-banana oatmeal
1 organic peach
1 organic banana
Organic whole-grain oatmeal
Blend and add water until desired texture is reached.
MultiCare Mom and Baby Support Group
The MultiCare Mom and Baby Support Group meets every Tuesday at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital.
The group is free and open to any new moms, with sessions for 0-6-month-old babies and 6-12-month-old babies. The group is led by Janet Dill, a childbirth educator with MultiCare Health System. Dill sometimes invites speakers, or hosts group discussions, but some weeks the group is purely support.
