Seattle Mariners honor community service at MultiCare
The Seattle Mariners organization on Wednesday recognized the Tacoma Rainiers and two individual players with the 2010 John Ellis Award for community service, which included work that benefited MultiCare.
With the help of 14 players and three coaches, the Tacoma Rainiers Annual Golf Tournament raised $20,842.98 for MultiCare's Tree House, A Place For Families, which provides families a place to stay when their children are in Tacoma General Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Center.

Tacoma Rainiers teammates Matt Mangini, 24, and Mumba Rivera, 29, were each honored for their individual efforts, after accumulating more then 20 hours in the Tacoma community. Mangini led the team with 23 hours of community service participating in the Rainiers Annual Golf Tournament as well as coaching area youth in the team's annual baseball camp. He also made two special trips to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital to visit with patients and their families.
"The Mariners organization is committed to giving back to the community and prides itself on involvement by players and staff at all levels," said Pedro Grifol, director of player development. "We try to emphasize the value of being good citizens and role models. In addition, our affiliates understand the importance of reaching out to their communities, which is one of the reasons we enjoy our relationships with each club. We actively encourage all of our players to participate in these efforts."
The Mariners instituted the Ellis Award in 1998 to recognize community involvement by players in their minor league system. The Mariners minor leaguers were active in the community in 2010, bringing the total contributions by Mariners minor leaguers to over 10,000 hours in the last 13 years.
