Festival of Trees: Designer honors law enforcement
Theresa Wolland lost a neighbor and a friend - and the community lost a protector - two years ago when Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy Kent Mundell was killed in the line of duty. In his honor and in honor of the thousands of other law enforcement workers in Washington, Wolland designed a Christmas tree called “A Thin Blue Line.”
“It represents support and honors law enforcement,” she said as she adjusted the black and silver ribbon draped around the 7-foot tree, which is part of the 25th Annual Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center this week.
Wolland chose silver balls and sparkling stars to grace her tree. It’s topped with lanterns with blue lights in memory of fallen officers in Pierce County. Surrounding “A Thin Blue Line” is an old-fashioned black-and-white police pedal car for kids, a coffee maker and various gift cards to local donut shops – to “keep up the stereotype,” Wolland says. The tree comes with a certificate for a Labrador Retriever puppy and obedience classes.
Designers decorated 67 trees this week with various themes. They will be auctioned off Friday evening to raise money for Mary Bridge. The public can see the trees from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Festival of Trees raises money for critical care services and technology at the pediatric hospital and for Tree House, A Place for Families, which provides a conveniently located home away from home for families while their child is in the hospital.
