Twenty years ago, MultiCare first offered care and healing for patients in Covington. Since opening on Oct. 4, 1993, MultiCare’s original clinic has grown in size and expanded services to meet the health care needs of our growing community.
Today, MultiCare Covington Medical Center includes an Emergency Department, an Urgent Care Center, and planning is underway for a future hospital.
“As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we thank our patients for being with us along the way,” said Hugh Kodama, Vice President of MultiCare’s South King County Region. “We view it as a privilege to provide care for our friends and neighbors in South King County. We’ve been here since 1993, before Covington was incorporated as a city. We’re even more excited about what the next 20 years will bring.”
When the clinic opened in 1993, MultiCare was the first major health system to locate in Covington. Over the past 20 years in Covington, MultiCare has continued to invest in new services and technology, including surgical services and advanced diagnostics, to meet the needs of South King County.
One big moment in Covington’s history came at 7 a.m. on April 3, 2012, when the illumination of a red "Emergency" sign announced the opening of the MultiCare Covington Emergency Department on the MultiCare medical campus at 17700 S.E. 272nd St.
The Emergency Department includes the full complement of emergency medical services for adults and children. The facility’s 19 treatment rooms include four rooms specialized for kids.
Having both an Urgent Care and an Emergency Department in Covington enables the medical center to care for all patients in the most efficient and appropriate settings.
“The Emergency Department in Covington has greatly improved the service and care for residents,” Kodama said. “We can take care of many of their needs right in our community, and patients will be connected to MultiCare’s network of specialists throughout King and Pierce counties.”
The MultiCare Covington Emergency Department has augmented the MultiCare network of primary and specialty care clinics in Covington, Maple Valley and Kent, as well as MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, Tacoma General Hospital, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center and Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma, and Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.
The Tacoma-based, not-for-profit MultiCare Health System is the area’s largest provider of health care services, serving patients at more than 100 sites of care in Pierce, South King, Kitsap and Thurston counties. The health system traces its heritage to the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital in 1882.
