Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Paul and tiger feeling grrreat!

Posted on Sep 17, 2013 ( comments)

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so we wanted to share an update on one of our young patients.

You might remember 8-year-old Paul Dawkins from a story in March, when he made a get-well poster for his tiger friend Berani at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

Paul was receiving treatment at Mary Bridge when he explained his special connection with the tiger who wasn’t feeling well: “I was diagnosed with leukemia the same week that Berani was born.”

Fast forward six months: Both Paul and the tiger are feeling great. Paul just started fourth grade this fall.

“Paul is doing very well!” said his mom, Jen. “He is in the two-year-long maintenance phase for his ALL treatment. It took a while to get his meds and numbers to be where they needed to be, but all has been stable for about two months.”

Over the summer, Paul attended Camp Sparkle with his brother and cousins, thanks to Gilda's Club Seattle, which organizes the camp for kids affected by cancer.

Then the last week of August, Paul returned to Point Defiance Zoo, where he helped the tigers Berani and Dumai celebrate their 1st birthdays.

Both the boy and the tigers had plenty of reasons to celebrate.
