MultiCare and the YMCA announce expansion in Sumner

Posted on Jan 3, 2014 ( comments)
With an estimated 22,000 people expected to join the Gordon Family YMCA when it opens in Sumner in 2015, MultiCare Health System and the Y will provide combined services to those in and around Sumner.

MultiCare Health System and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties are further expanding their partnership to create a healthier community in Sumner.

With an estimated 22,000 people expected to join the Gordon Family YMCA when it opens in Sumner in 2015, MultiCare and the Y will provide combined services to those in and around Sumner. The new facility is planned for a 10-acre site at the corner of 64th Street East and 160th Avenue East.

“A partnership of this kind just makes sense for the community,” said YMCA President and CEO Bob Ecklund. “We exist to serve the community and providing top-of-the-line services in conjunction with better health is a win for all involved.”

MultiCare plans to offer therapy services in the new facility including physical therapy and aquatic therapy. Members can team up with MultiCare providers in the YMCA facility as they work to reach their health goals.

“MultiCare is committed to improving the health of patients in the communities we serve,” said Diane Cecchettini, RN, President and CEO of MultiCare. “We’ve had a long standing partnership with the YMCA throughout Pierce County. Together, we can emphasize the value of exercise and nutrition and provide tools to help people maximize their health.”

The two organizations, which have partnered since 2003, also have a therapy site at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA in Gig Harbor, which brought residents like Rosemary Loper back to the activities they love thanks to skilled MultiCare Health System therapists.

“My physician referred me to physical therapists at the MultiCare clinic inside the Tom Taylor Family Y after undergoing rotator cuff surgery,” Loper said. “I was impressed with the YMCA when I pulled into the parking lot and entered the facility filled with people who were exercising and having fun. I sail six months of the year in the tropics and was very motivated to recover more than functional use of my shoulder. Because the staff can use the entire YMCA facility to challenge patients, I experienced a wide variety of exercises that got me back to a very active sailing season.”

The two organizations have multiple locations throughout the South Sound and work together at many Pierce County YMCA locations and elsewhere in the community.

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y provides $5.6 million in financial assistance and program subsidy annually, enabling more than 50,000 people in need to access YMCA programs. The Y has been enriching Pierce and Kitsap communities for 130 years.

MultiCare Health System is an integrated health care delivery system with five hospitals and dozens of primary, specialty and urgent care clinics serving patients in Pierce, King, Thurston and Kitsap counties.
