Tacoma among Top 10 Fittest Cities: 5 ways we like to work out

Thanks to residents who exercise – and can’t stop talking about it on Facebook – Tacoma ranks among the Top 10 “Fittest Cities” in the United States, according to a list based on user data from Facebook.

“Ranking of the fittest cities is based on fitness-related mentions, check-ins and use of fitness apps over a period of three months in U.S. cities with at least 200,000 Facebook users,” the social network said.

Tacoma, at No. 9, was the only city in Washington state to be recognized. (Seattle must have stopped to take a water break.)

The only other Northwest city was Portland, ranked No. 6. (See the full list here.)

A Yahoo story about the “Fittest Cities” mentions the usage of websites and apps that count calories or track exercise. Yahoo highlights one app, GymPact, that charges people a fee for skipping their workout (those who exercise pocket the cash). Did you know? One of the founders of GymPact is originally from Tacoma (go Foss Falcons!).

Here are some of our favorite ways to stay active in Tacoma:

  1. Play at Metro Parks Tacoma: From sports to spraygrounds, Metro Parks Tacoma offers more than 70 sites around the city for fun in the sun. We’re lucky to have Wright Park right across the street from our MultiCare Tacoma campus, which contributes to better health for both our employees and our patients.
  2. Go for a run with the Tacoma Runners: We love the Tacoma Runners – a social running club that sprang up in January 2010 with a handful of people running 3(ish) miles to and from local watering holes on Thursday nights. Today, they have more than 2,000 members and are growing every day. Membership is free, casual, and open to runners of any speed. They’ve also started a series of free 5k runs on Saturday mornings.   3. Join the YMCA: In 2005, MultiCare Health System and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties formed a 10-year partnership to focus on improving the health and wellness of our community through fitness and nutrition. There are two YMCA locations in Tacoma, and even more in surrounding communities, including Puyallup, Lakewood and Gig Harbor. If you really want to get your blood pumping, try Tracy’s R.I.P.P.E.D. class at the Tacoma Center branch, or step aerobics with Susan at the Morgan Family branch. With cardio machines, weight rooms, swimming pools and a wide array of group fitness classes, you’re sure to find something that’s just your speed.
  4. Run the Sound to Narrows: You’ll truly earn your fitness stripes with this one – with cred among your Tacoma peers and the broader running community. This annual 12K is a doozy, finishing with a final mile of nonstop hills that you’ll definitely want to write home about. But even less-seasoned runners have fun with this 41-year community race, that includes a stroller walk, a 5K and even kid-sized sprints. Learn more at www.soundtonarrows.org.
  5. Ready, Set, Go! 5-2-1-0!: Ready, Set, Go! is a community-based initiative in Pierce County to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children, youth and families. Healthy choices are easier to make in a healthy environment with access to healthy foods and physical activity. Ready, Set, Go! aims to improve health in Pierce County by making healthy changes where people live, learn, work, and play. Aim for: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, 2 or less hours of recreational screen time every day, 1 hour or more of physical activity every day and 0 drinks with added sugar every day.
