Together For Kids: Walk Across America
The first annual “Together For Kids: Walk Across America” will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2008. The national goal is to get enough participants involved to walk a total of 14,911 miles, the distance it would take to link all of the “Together For Kids” member hospitals from Boston, Massachusetts to Honolulu, Hawaii. Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center is a “Together For Kids” founding member hospital.
Locally, Tacoma Mall will be turned into a walking course and walkers will raise money for the Childhood Obesity Program at Mary Bridge by soliciting a minimum of $30 in pledges, which includes a t-shirt and a Jump rope for youth participants and a pedometer for adults. Any mall walker raising $100 or more in pledges by October 25 will be awarded an iPod Shuffle.
One of the primary goals of “Together For Kids” is to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity through programs, counseling and events. The “Walk Across America” event is an opportunity to get children and adults together, contribute to the mileage goal and help fight childhood obesity in their own community.
“The more mall walkers we have, the more miles we can log and the more money we can raise to fight childhood obesity,” said Michael Shields, Director of Special Events and Corporate Relations for MultiCare. “This is a great, indoor family event where everyone wins.”
Registration for the event begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 25 in Tacoma Mall’s concourse outside JC Penney. The walk begins at 8 a.m. and will end at 10 a.m. In addition to the mall walk, the Mary Bridge Center For Childhood Safety will be selling and fitting discounted bike and sport helmets; Barrel No. 51 will be selling barbeque sauces and rubs with 100% of the purchases benefiting Mary Bridge; and the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce County and the MultiCare Center For Health Living will host booths focused on providing information about exercise and good nutrition.
