Hip Fractures

Most hip fractures in older adults are caused by falls. As bones age, they become more brittle and are more likely to break, even from a minor fall. Women tend to be most at risk for hip fractures because of the loss of bone mass due to osteoporosis. Family history, weight, activity level, smoking and other health problems can increase your risk of a hip fracture.

Hip fractures in older adults often mean a change in lifestyle for up to a year while recovering. Most patients are able to return to normal activity with physical therapy and support.

Hip fractures are treated with surgery. Depending on the location of the fracture, the surgeon may insert pins, screws or a rod to repair the break. Severe breaks may be treated with a full hip replacement.
